Blog Assignment #1

About Me

Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth Mims and I am 22 years old. I am a junior at the University of South Alabama and, in the spring of 2011, I switched my major from Biomedical Sciences to Elementary Education. My initial plan upon starting college was to earn my degree in Biomedical Sciences and get accepted into pharmacy school. As I moved forward in my college career, I realized that I had no desire to be a pharmacist! My mother must have realized this way before I did, because she kept insisting that I would be a wonderful teacher. Evey time she would say that I should change my major to elementary education, I would turn a deaf ear towards her. I suppose the saying, "mother knows best" is correct because here I am, typing this blog for EDM 310. I will say that I am glad she was right. I have always adored children and working with them. I have taught Vacation Bible School at my church each year since I was twelve. I have even coached four and five year olds in soccer through my church. I believe that being an educator is one of the most important and valued professions.

I have lived in Mobile, AL my entire life so it is very important that I find a teaching position in another state, with florida and Tennessee being my top two choices. I love to travel more than anything. I mostly travel to Orlando, FL and Gatlinburg, TN. I lived in Orlando for a semester my freshman year of college working at Walt Disney World through their college program. That semester was the best semester of my college career!

Whenever I am not at school or work, I enjoy cooking and baking. I could care less at how much butter Paula Deen uses, she is still my favorite celebrity chef. I am also an avid reader. I cannot even finish one book without buying one or two more! The environment is very important to me. Go green! I love trying new things, like white water rafting and horseback riding. Maybe Tennessee is a good fit for me after all! I have mentioned here just a few from a long list of my hobbies and interests. I try to learn something new every day and live the most fulfilling life as humanly possible.

Randy Pausch

I enjoyed watching this short clip about time management by Randy Pausch. I do not know much about Pausch except that he wrote, "The Last Lecture" and sadly passed away in 2008 from pancreatic cancer. His book was written for his children, but it received worldwide attention after it was published.

To start, I have always had a problem with procrastinating and then becoming overwhelmed with everything I have to do. The key points Pausch hit on were very informative and insightful. I feel that this semester is really going to be a test to see if I can cure myself from the procrastination plague. I have always carried a planner but sometimes, I forget to write in it. Pausch mentioned in the video to plan each day, week, and semester. AS long as I have a plan, I can modify it if need be. My favorite quote by Pausch is, "failing to plan is planning to fail." This is a great quote to live by in college and the professional world. Pausch also says to do the task that we are most dreading, first. I am definitely going to try and apply his methods on time management into my everyday life so I can make the most out of my time.

  1. Hi Elizabeth! I enjoyed reading this post! You did a very good job of telling us about yourself. I also love to travel and I am new to the education program as well. I thought that all of your line breaks, headers, and spelling looked good. There were a couple of sentences toward the end that could use some polishing to make them flow a little better, but it still sounded very good.
I thought you did a good job of summarizing the Pausch video and making it clear what you learned from it. Make sure that you are clearly identifying the video itself even though we haven't done links yet.
Overall, well done on this post. I look forward to reading your blog in the future!!
